Sound Design

Overview

The general idea is to have several tracks for each area of the game (whilst potentially having some ‘style’ across all the areas to tie them together). Ideally, these tracks would follow a similar style/rhythm and would build/layer together.

  • Area theme
  • Boss theme
  • Combat theme

We’d also like to have some general tracks:

  • Hub/village theme
  • Light music for rest areas (also used on start menu)
    • Maybe just a single instrument being played by an NPC
    • Ambient sounds in the background, campfire noises

Level 1 - The Tunnels

  • Maybe slightly more percussion based
  • Fairly slow
  • Damp, slightly spooky cave atmosphere
  • ‘Tribal’ style?

Boss Theme

Level 2 - Sewers

  • Creepy atmosphere
  • Disturbing/twisted
  • Maybe a bit more minimalist music with ambient sounds (water, drips, echoes, scurrying, etc.)

Boss Theme

  • Quite a frantic/alarming boss fight

Level 3 - Under City

  • Melancholic
  • Medieval style music (although avoiding being upbeat)

Boss Theme

  • Imposing track
  • Horns/brass maybe?
  • Distorted because the rats have taken over the grand suit of armour

Level 4 - Crumbling castle

  • Starting to build into the ‘grand’ palace theme
  • I think piano would work well here

Boss Theme

  • Potentially some more ‘digital/fuzzy’ sounds added to go with the piano
    • Would fit the ‘science’ theme of the boss fight
    • May not fit the tone of the game?

Level 5 - Palace

  • Keep the piano from before but building layers
  • Fairly grand, orchestral sounding-ish (may not be feasible)
  • String arrangement
  • Building up more

Boss Theme

  • Might change to more of a muted, moody track, add more tension (just the piano or string with intensity?)
  • Or we go in the opposite direction and add a choir/more layers/arrangements? (epic drums)
  • Will depend a bit on the design of the boss
