Story
- Fantasy land once home to a feline kingdom, marked by a towering castle/palace at its centre
- Medieval architectural aesthetic with a steampunk-like twist
- Technological breakthrough in the kingdom was based on the discovery of ‘Spell Stones’, which could be used to power mechanisms
- Left unchecked, a rat colony took hold in the sewers below, multiplying rapidly
- In an event referred to as ‘the infestation’, the rats rose up to flood the city, taking it overnight • Some felines escaped and established a small, distant tribe/village
- Rats have now monopolised the kingdom for years
- Feline leader plans to retake the old kingdom by sending lone warriors (the player) to infiltrate the kingdom and destabilise it from within - the tribe wouldn’t defeat the infestation head-on
- These infiltrators (each of the player’s attempts) come from a proud warrior line that led the royal guard before the infestation
- City/Castle rats live to a higher standard and continue to experiment with the Spell Stone technology left behind by the felines
- Sewer/tunnel outcasts have retained their more animalistic ways and created their own technology using a ‘sewer serum’
- The tribe hopes that if the infiltrators are able to eliminate the rat leaders, the rest of the rats will fall back into chaos and disperse of their own accord, allowing the felines to reclaim the city
- The easiest entry to the city is through the tunnels and sewage network beneath
- The endeavour is expected to cost many lives (each of the player’s attempts)
- As the player makes progress towards reaching the palace, they will rescue trapped felines
- This will cause the village to grow and develop new facilities
- A new warrior after each death, each shares the same abilities, but their appearances (fur colour/pattern) differ
- Feline Tribe Leader - Informs player of their goal and delivers opening tutorial
- Feline Treasurer - keeps track of the player’s banked resources, interact to spend resources developing village infrastructure (Forge/Grandforge)
-
Feline Merchant - Risks exploring infested territory to return with scavenged goods for sale (Spell Stones, Runes, Slots)
- Can be rescued from trap in infested tunnels by the player, becomes permanently available as a merchant in village
- Merchant inventory expands as the player reaches progression milestones
-
Feline Smith Apprentice - Works in the forge
- Can be rescued from cage in sewer, returns to village
- Player can spend resources with the treasurer to build him a forge
- Building Forge permanently upgrades player attack damage for all future runs
- An apprentice to the Grandsmith before the infestation, captured during the attack, forced to smith for the city rats alongside the Grandsmith, eventually tossed into sewers when considered worthless
- Taken by sewer rats and forced to help with their experiments, leading to creation of ‘sewer serum’ tech (chemical augmentation)
-
Feline Grandsmith - Works in the improved forge and unlocks extra upgrades
- Can be found and rescued from the castle (level 4), after which he returns to the village permanently
- Once rescued, player can upgrade forge into Grandforge, further increasing player attack damage for all subsequent runs
- Before the infestation, spearheaded the technological innovation of the felines
- During the infestation, stayed behind to defend the city with the guards and was captured alongside his apprentice when overrun
